The Day of the LORD is Coming

Zechariah Sermon Series: Sermon 38

6-29-25 – Jerry Mongello

Jerry Mongello brings us: Current Events:
On Saturday night, the United States struck Iran’s three major nuclear sites (Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan) using six 30,000 lb. bunker buster bombs. Iran’s Foreign Minister responded that they will consult with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Although this war between Israel and Iran is serious, it is not the war of Ezekiel 38–39. However, this may be the event that draws Iran closer to Russia in alignment with that prophetic scenario.

Prayer:
Please continue praying for Israel, for the protection of civilians, and for discernment in these difficult times.

Book of Zechariah Overview:

  • Chapters 1–6: Eight night visions
  • Chapters 7–8: Questions regarding fasting
  • Chapters 9–11: First oracle (prophecy) about the Messiah’s first coming and rejection
  • Chapters 12–14: Second oracle focusing on the Messiah’s second coming, Israel’s final battles, and Christ’s reign in the Millennium

We now enter the final chapter—Zechariah 14—at a time when God’s providence is visibly unfolding around us.

Genesis 12:2–3 (NKJV):
“I will make you a great nation; I will bless you… I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you.”

It is my belief that God used the U.S. military to prevent Iran from launching a nuclear attack on Israel, thus preserving His covenant promises. If Israel were destroyed, God’s Word would fail—and that cannot happen.

Psalm 138:2 (NKJV):
“For You have magnified Your word above all Your name.”

At the same time, these events appear to be positioning Russia and Iran for the fulfillment of Ezekiel 38–39, when God says:

“I will turn you around, put hooks into your jaws, and lead you out… Persia (Iran), Ethiopia, and Libya are with them…” (Ezekiel 38:4–5)

Some believe there are two distinct wars described in Ezekiel 38–39. While we can’t form doctrine around this, it’s worth prayerfully considering.

Zechariah 14:1 – The Second Advent

Zechariah 14:1 (NKJV):
“Behold, the day of the LORD is coming, And your spoil will be divided in your midst.”

This verse speaks of the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. It complements Zechariah 12:10, where we see a broken and repentant Israel receiving their Messiah.

Zechariah 12:10 (NKJV):
“They will look on Me whom they pierced… and mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son.”

The Day of the LORD in Prophecy:

  • Isaiah 2:10–12: The proud will be humbled
  • Isaiah 13:6,9: The day of the LORD is destruction from the Almighty
  • Joel 3:11–17: Judgment in the Valley of Jehoshaphat
  • Joel 2:28–32: Outpouring of the Spirit and signs in the heavens

Revelation 14:15–20 shows this prophetic picture fulfilled in the harvest of judgment—God’s wrath poured out.

Revelation 14:20:
“The winepress was trampled outside the city, and blood came out… up to the horses’ bridles.”

What causes this day to come?

Zechariah 14:2 (NKJV):
“I will gather all the nations to battle against Jerusalem…”

Some commentators have tied this to the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70. However, the Day of the LORD as described here did not happen then. Jesus Himself made a distinction:

Isaiah 61:1–3 (quoted by Jesus in Luke 4) — He stopped short of reading about the “day of vengeance” because that part is still future.

Malachi 4:1–6 – Final Warning and Promise

“The day is coming, burning like an oven… But to you who fear My name, the Sun of Righteousness shall arise with healing in His wings.”

Malachi promises both judgment and healing. Elijah will come before that great and dreadful day, turning hearts and preparing the way.

Let us be that prepared people.

Stay in the Word. Watch. Be Ready.
