The Return of the King – Living Waters

Zechariah Sermon Series: Sermon 42

7-20-25 – Jerry Mongello

Introduction

In this continuation of our study through Zechariah 14, we examine verses 6–9 and revisit some vital truths from verse 4. These verses reveal deep prophetic insight into the return of Jesus Christ, the transformation of the Mount of Olives, and the beginning of His Millennial reign.

We also take a moment to remember and honor the life of Pastor John MacArthur, who went home to be with the Lord after 56 years of faithful service.

Please keep Pastor Martin in prayer as he undergoes radiation treatments.

Jesus Will Return Where He Ascended

Zechariah 14:4 declares that in that day, the Lord’s feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, facing Jerusalem on the east. The Mount will split from east to west, forming a great valley. This is the very location from which Jesus ascended to heaven, as recorded in Acts 1:4–11.

“This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.” (Acts 1:11)

Daniel 7:13–14 also prophesies of the Son of Man coming with the clouds of heaven to receive an everlasting kingdom. This is not only a return; it is a crowning.

In Ezekiel 10–11, we also see the glory of the LORD departing from the Temple and pausing over the Mount of Olives. In Zechariah, we see the glory returning with triumph.

A Unique Day Unlike Any Other (Zechariah 14:6–7)

These verses describe an extraordinary day—one that is neither day nor night, yet light will appear at evening. This mystery points to a supernatural, God-ordained moment.

Parallel prophetic passages include:

  • Isaiah 13:9–11 – Cosmic signs of judgment and wrath.
  • Isaiah 24:21–23 – The sun and moon humbled before God’s reign.
  • Amos 8:9 and Matthew 27:45–46 – Historical moments marked by supernatural darkness, including Jesus’ crucifixion.

This “day known only to the LORD” seems to mark the transition into the Millennial Kingdom of Christ, a time of divine government and restoration.

Living Waters Shall Flow from Jerusalem (Zechariah 14:8–9)

Zechariah describes living water flowing out from Jerusalem, half to the Dead Sea and half to the Mediterranean. This water is a symbol of God’s healing, purifying presence.

Ezekiel 47:1–9 expands on this vision, showing water flowing from the temple, healing the Dead Sea, and bringing life wherever it goes. The river grows deeper and wider, nurturing trees and sustaining life.

Modern findings in Israel include fresh water under Jerusalem and the appearance of fish in Dead Sea sinkholes, aligning with the prophecy.

The LORD Shall Be King Over All the Earth

Verse 9 declares:

“And the LORD shall be King over all the earth. In that day it shall be—‘The LORD is one,’ and His name one.”

This is the fulfillment of God’s ultimate plan—the visible, global reign of Christ. He will be the only King. His name will be the only name exalted.

Jesus, the Living Water

Jesus spoke often of living water:

  • John 4:10–14 – He offers water that leads to eternal life.
  • John 6:35 – “He who comes to Me shall never hunger… never thirst.”
  • John 7:37–38 – Rivers of living water will flow from the heart of those who believe.

Revelation 7:9–17 paints a beautiful picture of the redeemed being led by the Lamb to fountains of living water.

Personal Application

For those who do not yet believe, the gospel invitation is open:

“If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” (Romans 10:9)

For believers, this passage calls us to shine the light of Christ in a dark world and to lead others to the living water that never runs dry.

Conclusion

Zechariah 14 reminds us that God is fully in control and guiding history toward His divine conclusion. The return of Christ will be unlike any other event—a day of judgment, glory, and restoration. The living waters that flow from Jerusalem will heal the nations, and the LORD alone will reign as King.

Until that day, we remain faithful, watchful, and anchored in the hope of His coming.

“And the LORD shall be King over all the earth. In that day it shall be—‘The LORD is one,’ and His name one.” (Zechariah 14:9)
