Encouraging Men and Fathers

Father’s Day 2025

6-15-25 – Jerry Mongello

Proverbs 4:3-4

Father’s Day can stir a mix of emotions. For some, it’s joyful celebration with their dad. For others, it brings grief, pain, or even resentment. Yet God, our perfect Father, desires to heal and restore our understanding of fatherhood through His example.

Often, on Mother’s Day, we honor and praise moms, but Father’s Day sermons can feel more like correction. This time, let us be encouraged. As Pastor Ted once said, God sees what we will become in Christ, not merely what we are or have been.

The Lord Looks at the Heart

God sees beyond appearance, like when He chose David to be king (1 Samuel 16:6-13). Our Father is not looking for perfection, but for hearts surrendered to Him.

Fathers of the Faith

Abraham – The Father of Many Nations Abraham obeyed God and trusted His promises, even when asked to sacrifice Isaac. His faith pointed toward the Messiah. (Genesis 17:4-5; Hebrews 11:8-19)

Noah – A Father Who Walked with God In a world of wickedness, Noah stood for righteousness, saved his family, and by faith became heir of the righteousness according to faith. (Genesis 6:9; Hebrews 11:7)

Jacob – The Imperfect but Chosen Father Jacob wrestled with God and was transformed. Though flawed, he left a spiritual legacy for his children, including prophetic blessings (Genesis 32:22-29; Genesis 49).

Fathers today may not build arks or birth nations, but they can walk in faith and model godliness in their generation.

God the Perfect Father

God models perfect fatherhood:

  • Just and Holy (Hebrews 12:5-8)
  • Merciful and Loving (Psalm 103:6-13)
  • Faithful and Forgiving (1 Peter 1:3-5)

Jesus revealed this heart of the Father:

“If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!” (Luke 11:13)

The Refining Work of Fatherhood

God does not leave us as we are. Like silver and gold refined in fire, He shapes us through trials, calling us into deeper faith and dependence (Zechariah 13:9).

Like Abraham, Noah, and Jacob, today’s fathers are called to leave a legacy. Not one of perfection, but of faith, obedience, and godly example.

Encouragement for Today

If your earthly father failed you, know that God never will. If you’re a father, know that God is with you and shaping you into the man your family needs.

Let us honor our earthly fathers, and more importantly, worship our heavenly Father who never fails.

Happy Father’s Day.
