Hardened Hearts & True Faith

Family of God – Mark 3:31–35

In Gospel of Mark 3:31–35, Jesus redefines spiritual family:

“For whoever does the will of God is My brother and My sister and mother.”

Parallel accounts appear in Gospel of Matthew 12:50 and Gospel of Luke 8:21.

Mark uniquely records that His family once thought He was “out of His mind” (Mark 3:21).

In Gospel of John 7:5, we learn His brothers did not believe in Him prior to the resurrection.

Yet after the resurrection, James and Jude became faithful servants (Galatians 1:19; James 1:1; Jude 1:1).

Mary’s faith is evident from the angel Gabriel’s announcement in Luke 1:26–38 and her confidence at the wedding in Cana (John 2:3–5).

Why Jesus Taught in Parables – Mark 4

In Gospel of Mark 4:1–2, Jesus begins teaching by the sea in parables.

Matthew 13:10–17 explains why:

  • Truth was revealed to receptive hearts.
  • Prophecy from Isaiah 6 was fulfilled.
  • Hardened hearts were exposed.

Psalm 78:1–3 shows God’s desire for His people to understand.

Parables were not meant to hide truth from seekers but to reveal the condition of the heart.

The Fig Tree and Fruitless Faith

In Gospel of Matthew 21:18–32, the fig tree symbolizes outward appearance without fruit.

Religious leaders questioned Jesus’ authority despite witnessing miracles.

This mirrors the warning from Book of Ezekiel 20 and 22 — hearts fixed on idols while outwardly professing faith.

A Warning to the Church

God rebuked Israel for divided hearts.

The Church today must examine itself:

  • Are we holding onto idols?
  • Are we balancing one foot in the world and one in Christ?
  • Are we teaching the whole counsel of God?

James 3:1 reminds teachers of stricter judgment.

Ezekiel 22:30 records God searching for someone to “stand in the gap.”

Call to Self-Examination

We are not called to legalism.
But neither are we called to tolerate sin.

This message is a sobering call:

Examine your heart.
Do we merely hear the Word — or do we obey it?

Join us next week as we continue our verse-by-verse study through the Gospel of Mark. Let us remain steadfast in faith, walk in love, and share the mercy of Christ — for He calls sinners to repentance and to life.
