Jesus rides into Jerusalem on April 3, AD 32. God prophecies the exact day the Messiah will ride into Jerusalem to be proclaimed King. We will investigate the purpose of Jesus’s Triumphal Entry as well as the prophecies related to what we call Palm Sunday. We will start with the prophecy concerning the Triumphal Entry.
There are four key points we will cover about Palm Sunday:
- To fulfill God’s prophetic word.
- Anoint the Most Holy.
- To fulfill the requirement of the Passover Lamb.
- To teach and prepare for His death, resurrection, and His return to the Father.
1. To Fulfill God’s Prophetic Word
God holds His word higher and greater than His name. Jesus, throughout His ministry, spoke only what He heard from the Father. We will see God’s prophetic word fulfilled throughout this Palm Sunday message.
Psalm 138:2 NKJV
“I will worship toward Your holy temple, And praise Your name For Your lovingkindness and Your truth; For You have magnified Your word above all Your name.”
Daniel 9:24-27 NKJV
The prophecy of the seventy weeks (weeks of years) was fulfilled on April 3, 32 AD. 69 weeks of 7 years equals 483 years (173,880 days), and the prophecy came true the exact day Jesus entered Jerusalem, proclaimed King.
2. Anoint the Most Holy
This is fulfilled as mentioned in Zechariah 9:9 and confirmed by Matthew 21.
Zechariah 9:9 NKJV
“Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.”
Matthew 21:4-9 NKJV
“All this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: ‘Tell the daughter of Zion, Behold, your King is coming to you, Lowly, and sitting on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.'”
3. To Fulfill the Requirement of the Passover Lamb
The Passover Lamb, chosen on the 10th of Nisan and kept for 4 days, was examined for blemishes. Jesus, without blemish, was examined and found pure.
Exodus 12:1-7 NKJV
The Passover Lamb must be without blemish. Jesus, the true Passover Lamb, was sacrificed on the cross.
4. To Teach and Prepare for His Death, Resurrection, and Return to the Father
Jesus cleanses the temple, teaches parables, and speaks of His coming death and resurrection, preparing His followers for the journey ahead.
Matthew 21:12-16 NKJV
Jesus cleanses the temple and drives out those who have turned it into a “den of thieves.” He heals the blind and the lame, and the children cry out “Hosanna to the Son of David!”
Conclusion
We reflect on the purpose of Palm Sunday in fulfilling prophecy, preparing for the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus as the Passover Lamb, and His triumphal entry as the King of Kings.
