Introduction to Fasting

To begin with, I want to quote John Tushabe from a booklet he wrote. I will be going over more of his booklet next week to go over how to fast, how not to fast, and different kinds of fasts.

Fasting: The Most Powerful Spiritual Discipline

Fasting and prayer are not the typical messages you hear at churches or on Christian Television. However, fasting is very biblical, and if we are going to be biblical Christians, fasting is a key discipline we must adopt. Fasting doesn’t change God, but it changes us and positions us in a better place where we can receive from God, and it empowers us with spiritual authority.

When men and women fasted with proper biblical motivation—seeking God’s face, not just His blessings—with a broken, repentant, and contrite spirit, God heard from heaven and healed them; He moved on their behalf, and even nations were saved. Fasting and prayer can bring about revival—a change in our own lives, our families, churches, and communities.

Why Should We Fast?

The LORD is with us when we are with Him!!!

[2Chronicles 15:1-2 NKJV] 1 Now the Spirit of God came upon Azariah the son of Oded. 2 And he went out to meet Asa, and said to him: “Hear me, Asa, and all Judah and Benjamin. The LORD [is] with you while you are with Him. If you seek Him, He will be found by you, but if you forsake Him, He will forsake you.”

Fasting in the Bible

[Joshua 5:13-15 NKJV] 13 And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted his eyes and looked, and behold, a Man stood opposite him with His sword drawn in His hand. 14 So He said, “No, but [as] Commander of the army of the LORD I have now come.” 15 Then the Commander of the LORD’s army said to Joshua, “Take your sandal off your foot, for the place where you stand [is] holy.” And Joshua did so.

Guidelines Before Fasting

  • Pray to the Holy Spirit to give you spiritual strength and complete your fast.

    [Romans 8:26-28 NKJV]

  • Confess and repent of any sin you have.

    [Psalm 34:17-18, Psalm 51:16-17 NKJV]

  • Humble yourself before the LORD.

    [Psalm 35:13, Ezra 8:21 NKJV]
