Zechariah 14 – Part 4

A Study in Prophecy and the Second Coming of Jesus

Prayer & Introduction

I have been teasing these passages for weeks, and I pray you find them as awe-inspiring and hope-filled as I have. Today, we look at some incredible prophetic connections in Zechariah 14, linking them with Isaiah, Psalms, the Gospels, and Revelation.

Mount of Olives Split – Zechariah 14:4

“And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, which faces Jerusalem on the east. And the Mount of Olives shall be split in two, from east to west, making a very large valley; half of the mountain shall move toward the north and half of it toward the south.”
Zechariah 14:4

While cross-referencing this passage, I found a powerful prophetic prayer in Isaiah 64—a prayer that many scholars believe was intended for comfort during Israel’s Babylonian captivity. But the language sounds like something even more dramatic: the Second Coming of Jesus.

Isaiah 64: A Prophetic Prayer

Dr. Arnold Fruchtenbaum, a Messianic Jewish scholar, agrees this prayer points to Zechariah 14:4. Isaiah 64 wasn’t fulfilled during the return from exile under Cyrus in 536 B.C.—but it makes perfect sense when applied to the return of Jesus at the end of the Great Tribulation.

Isaiah 64:1 – “Oh, that You would rend the heavens! That You would come down! That the mountains might shake at Your presence!”

This theme continues: shaking mountains, fire, judgment, and God’s salvation. See also:

  • Psalm 118:25-26 – The Jews cry: “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!”
  • Psalm 79 – A plea for salvation understood best in the context of the faithful remnant awaiting Messiah’s return.
  • Isaiah 43:1-3 – God reassures His people of redemption: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you… When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned.”

The Hebrew word “bara” in Isaiah 43:1 (created) suggests a new transformation, reminding us of:

2 Corinthians 5:17“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation…”

Zechariah 14:5 – An Escape Route

“Then you shall flee through My mountain valley… As you fled from the earthquake in the days of Uzziah… Thus the LORD my God will come, and all the saints with You.”
Zechariah 14:5

This valley—created by the splitting Mount of Olives—provides a way of escape for the Jews in Jerusalem during the climactic end of the Campaign of Armageddon.

Before this, the LORD first defends Judah at Bozrah:

Zechariah 12:7“The LORD will save the tents of Judah first…”

The final confrontation ends in the Valley of Jehoshaphat, as described in Joel 3:

The Final Battle – Joel 3 & Matthew 24

“Multitudes in the valley of decision… The sun and moon will grow dark… The LORD will roar from Zion…”
Joel 3:14-16

“Immediately after the tribulation… the Son of Man will appear… they will see Him coming on the clouds…”
Matthew 24:29–31

The splitting of the Mount of Olives may happen first—providing an escape before a massive earthquake destroys much of Jerusalem. Revelation 16 backs this up:

A Global Earthquake – Revelation 16:17–21

“A great earthquake, such a mighty and great earthquake as had not occurred since men were on the earth… The great city was divided into three parts… Every island fled away…”

This sets the stage for Jesus to return visibly on the Mount of Olives, as prophesied and longed for.

Zechariah 14:6-7 – The Day of the LORD

“It shall be one day known to the LORD—neither day nor night… at evening time it shall be light.”

A day unlike any other. And it leads into…

Revelation 20:1-6 – The Millennial Kingdom

Jesus defeats Satan, casts him into the abyss, and reigns with His saints for a thousand years.

“Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection… they shall reign with Him…”

Closing Thoughts

All of this ties back to Zechariah 14: the Messiah’s return, the rescue of the remnant, and the establishment of His Kingdom.

Let us be watchful, prayerful, and like the Bereans in Acts 17:11—searching the Scriptures daily to discern the truth.

Acts 17:11“They received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so.”

Discussion Questions

  1. How do Isaiah 64 and Psalm 79 deepen your understanding of Zechariah 14?
  2. Why is the Mount of Olives’ location and splitting significant to end-times prophecy?
  3. What does it mean to be part of the “new creation” in Christ in light of Isaiah 43?

May God give us eyes to see and hearts to discern His soon return.
Come, Lord Jesus.
