JESUS: Authority Over Creation

Mark Chapter 6, Part 3: The Bread of Life and Authority Over Creation

Review: Jesus Gives Rest to His Servants

Last week we ended in Mark 6:30-31, where the twelve returned from ministry physically and spiritually exhausted.

Jesus recognized their weariness and said:

“Come aside by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.”

Jesus not only sends us into ministry—He also restores His servants.

The Feeding of the Five Thousand

Mark 6:32-44

As Jesus attempted to withdraw with His disciples, the multitudes followed Him.

Instead of sending them away, Jesus was moved with compassion.

Mark 6:34

“Because they were like sheep not having a shepherd.”

Jesus first fed them spiritually by teaching the Word of God before feeding them physically.

This fulfills what Moses declared:

Deuteronomy 8:3

“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord.”

The Compassion of the Good Shepherd

Jesus saw people abandoned by false shepherds.

This fulfills prophetic warnings:

  • Jeremiah 50:6 – “My people have been lost sheep.”
  • Zechariah 10:2 – “They are in trouble because there is no shepherd.”

Jesus is the Good Shepherd who gathers, teaches, feeds, and restores His flock.

Five Loaves, Two Fish, and a Miracle

Mark 6:35-44

Jesus asked His disciples:

“You give them something to eat.”

With only five loaves and two fish, Jesus fed over 5,000 men—possibly 15,000 including women and children.

After everyone was filled, twelve baskets remained.

Jesus always provides more than enough.

The Spiritual Lesson: The Bread of Life

John 6:22-39

The crowds followed Jesus because He fed them physically, but Jesus exposed their hearts:

“Do not labor for the food which perishes.”

Then Jesus declared:

John 6:35

“I am the bread of life.”

Jesus is not merely a provider of bread—He is the source of life itself.

Salvation cannot be earned through works.

Ephesians 2:8-9

“For by grace you have been saved through faith…”

Jesus Holds All Things Together

Colossians 1:15-17

“By Him all things were created… and in Him all things consist.”

Every miracle points to one truth:
Jesus is God in the flesh.

Jesus Walks on Water

Mark 6:45-52

After feeding the multitudes, Jesus sent His disciples across the sea.

In the fourth watch of the night—between 3:00 and 6:00 AM—Jesus came walking on the water.

The disciples were terrified.

Jesus said:

“Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.”

When Jesus entered the boat, the wind ceased.

Peter Walks on Water

Matthew 14:28-33

Peter stepped out in faith.

As long as his eyes remained on Jesus, he walked above the storm.

When he focused on the wind and waves, he began to sink.

The lesson is clear:
Faith looks at Jesus, not circumstances.

Trusting Jesus in the Storm

Life brings storms:

  • Loss of loved ones
  • Health challenges
  • Persecution
  • Trials and tribulations

Scripture teaches:

Proverbs 3:5-6

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart…”

Psalm 46:10

“Be still, and know that I am God.”

Isaiah 25:4

“You have been a refuge from the storm.”

Build Your Life on the Rock

Matthew 7:24-29

Storms come to every life.

Only those whose lives are built on Jesus Christ will stand.

Jesus taught with authority because He is the Rock of our salvation.
