Cross Reference: Matthew 15:1-20

An Official Delegation from Jerusalem

Mark 7:1

The Pharisees and some of the scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem.

This was not a random group of observers.

These were religious authorities—an official delegation sent to investigate Jesus, challenge Him, and record His actions.

Whenever we see Pharisees and scribes coming from Jerusalem, we are witnessing organized religious opposition.

The Accusation: Unwashed Hands

Mark 7:2

The Pharisees saw some of Jesus’ disciples eating with “defiled” hands and found fault.

The Greek word translated “found fault” (memphomai) means:

  • To blame
  • To accuse
  • To condemn

This was not a casual criticism.
It was a serious accusation.

This Was Not About Hygiene

Mark 7:3-5

This ceremonial washing had nothing to do with dirty hands.

The issue was ritual purification according to the “tradition of the elders.”

The Pharisees believed that touching something ceremonially unclean could spiritually defile them, so they practiced ceremonial washings before eating.

These traditions were oral laws developed during and after the Babylonian captivity and later written down in what became known as the Mishnah.

This was not commanded in Scripture for ordinary meals.

God’s Law only required priestly washings in specific ceremonial contexts (Leviticus 22:6-7).

Tradition Elevated Above Scripture

Mark 7:6-8

Jesus responded by quoting Isaiah:

Isaiah 29:13

“This people honors Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me.”

Jesus called them hypocrites because they had substituted man-made rules for God’s commands.

He warned:

“In vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.”

Religion Without Relationship

Man-made religion often focuses on appearances:

  • External performance
  • Public approval
  • Self-righteous rituals
  • Human traditions

But Jesus exposes the heart.

Colossians 2:16-22 warns against man-made regulations that have the appearance of wisdom but lack spiritual power.

Titus 1:15-16 reminds us that some profess to know God but deny Him by their works.

The Example of Corban

Mark 7:9-13

Jesus gives a stunning example of tradition replacing God’s command.

God commanded:

Exodus 20:12

“Honor your father and your mother.”

And:

Exodus 21:17

“He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.”

Yet religious tradition created a loophole called Corban.

A person could declare their future assets “dedicated to God,” which prevented those resources from being used to support aging parents.

In doing this, they appeared righteous while disobeying God.

Jesus said:

“Making the word of God of no effect through your tradition.”

The Danger of Religious Loopholes

Religion often teaches people how to appear holy while avoiding heart transformation.

God’s Law does something different:

  • It exposes sin
  • It reveals our need for a Savior
  • It confronts hypocrisy
  • It points us to grace in Christ

Religion says:
Try harder.

The Gospel says:
You need Jesus.

What Jesus Was Really Addressing

The issue was never handwashing.

The issue was:

  • Heart condition
  • Spiritual hypocrisy
  • Elevating tradition above truth
  • Replacing obedience with religious performance

Jesus teaches that true worship begins in the heart—not in rituals.

Key Takeaways

  • Religious tradition must never replace God’s Word.
  • External rituals cannot cleanse the heart.
  • God sees beyond appearances.
  • Hypocrisy dishonors true worship.
  • Religion exposes our inability to save ourselves.
  • The Gospel reveals our need for a Savior.

Discussion Questions

  1. How can tradition become more important than Scripture?
  2. What religious practices today can become external without heart transformation?
  3. What does Jesus mean by “their heart is far from Me”?
  4. How does the Gospel differ from religion?
  5. Are there traditions in your life that need to be examined by Scripture?
