Mark Chapter 6, Part 4: Touching the Hem of His Garment
Mark 6:53-56
After crossing the Sea of Galilee, Jesus and His disciples arrived in Gennesaret. Immediately, the people recognized Him.
Word spread throughout the entire region. The sick were carried on beds, mats, and stretchers to wherever Jesus was.
The people begged Him that they might only touch the hem of His garment.
And as many as touched Him were made well.
The Compassion of Jesus
These verses demonstrate:
- Jesus’ compassion
- His authority over sickness and disease
- His power over human life
- Evidence of His deity
- Fulfillment of prophecy
Jesus never turned away the broken, the hurting, or the sick.
Gennesaret: The Fertile Region of Naphtali
Gennesaret means “princely gardens.”
Located on the northwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee, this fertile region had already witnessed the ministry of Jesus.
The people recognized Him immediately because His reputation had spread throughout Galilee.
Touching the Hem of His Garment
The people believed that touching the hem of Jesus’ garment would bring healing.
This was not superstition.
It was faith in action.
We previously saw this in Mark 5 with the woman who had the issue of blood.
Her touch was an act of faith.
Prophecy Fulfilled
Malachi 4:2
“But to you who fear My name, the Sun of Righteousness shall arise with healing in His wings.”
The Hebrew word translated “wings” can also refer to the edges or corners of a garment.
Jesus allowing people to touch the hem of His garment points to Messianic fulfillment.
The Messiah’s Two Comings
Many in Israel expected only one coming of Messiah:
- A conquering King
- A deliverer from Rome
- A restorer of Israel’s kingdom
But Scripture reveals two comings:
The First Coming
Micah 5:2
The Messiah would be born in Bethlehem.
Isaiah 53
The suffering servant.
Rejected. Wounded. Bruised for our transgressions.
The Second Coming
Amos 9:11-15
The restoration of David’s kingdom.
Matthew 24:30-31
The Son of Man returns in power and great glory.
No One Comes Unless the Father Draws
John 6:44
“No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him.”
Just as the sick were carried to Jesus, we too cannot come to Him on our own.
The Father draws.
The Spirit convicts.
Jesus saves.
Eternal Security in Christ
John 10:28-29
“I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish.”
No one can snatch the believer from the Father’s hand.
A New Creation
2 Corinthians 5:17
“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.”
The greatest miracle is not physical healing—
it is spiritual transformation.
What Does It Mean to Abide?
John 15:1-27
To abide means:
- To remain in Christ
- To trust Him completely
- To surrender mind, body, soul, and spirit
- To trust Him regardless of circumstances
Abiding does not mean we get everything we want.
It means trusting Jesus regardless of the outcome.
Faith in Action
Romans 8:28
“All things work together for good to those who love God.”
Faith is not trusting God only when life makes sense.
Faith is trusting Him when it doesn’t.
Jesus Is Our Example
Luke 22:42
“Not My will, but Yours, be done.”
Luke 23:46
“Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit.”
Jesus entrusted His body, mind, soul, and spirit completely to the Father.
